Bill Nighan

Bill has served as interim CEO for a number of portfolio companies, including Nellix Endovascular, a medical device company with a groundbreaking platform for aneurysm repair. As well, Bill was interim CEO for Grandis, the pioneer in spintronics-based semiconductor memory technology. Bill also served as the interim CEO of Greystripe, the leader in advertising-supported content distribution for mobile phones, where he continues to serve on its Board of Directors. Bill also serves as a Director on the Boards of GigaFin, Spectragenics, Nellix, and Precision Photonics. Previously, Bill served on the Board of LIGHTCONNECT until its June 2006 acquisition by Neophotonics, and was also served as a Director of Lightwave Electronics until its April 2005 acquisition by JDS Uniphase.

Prior to founding Incubic with Milton Chang, Bill built and led the engineering teams that developed Spectra-Physics Lasers (SPL) diode-pumped solid-state and fiber laser products.

He was the Director of Engineering and Advanced Research in SPL's OEM Business Unit, from 1993 until 1999. The success of his leadership and the contribution of this business allowed SPL's transformation into "The Solid State Laser Company" and its successful IPO in 1997 (SPLI). Bill's group supported OEM customers in many markets with turn-key laser systems of ultra-high performance and reliability for 24/7 applications, like semiconductor memory repair, RF circuit trimming, rapid prototyping, and telecommunications. Among many successful products, he invented the multiple award-winning "Millennia", one of the most successful laser products in SPL history. Bill directed the company's IP strategy in solid-state lasers. These products still provide a substantial part of SPL's >$200M annual revenue (now part of Newport Corporation, NEWP).

Bill graduated from Brown University with a Sc.B. from the EE Honors Program and earned his Ph.D. degree from Princeton University in the EE Electronic Materials and Devices Program. He has had over twenty U.S. patents issued, with their foreign counterparts either issued or pending. Earlier in his career he authored many technical papers and conference presentations, including top-ranked papers at the CLEO conferences.
